How It Works

Viagra 50 mg is a PDE 5 inhibitor. It works by relaxing the muscles in the walls of the blood vessels to help increase the blood flow to the penis. It contains the ingredient Sildenafil Citrate that helps achieve and sustain an erection. When a person is sexually stimulated, a chemical known as Nitric Oxide is released into the penis.

This chemical is responsible for the production of cGMP, a molecule that controls the contraction and dilation of blood vessels. PDE 5 destroys cGMP and does not let erection to occur. Viagra 50 mg stops the action of PDE 5 and allows cGMP to be produced properly. This allows the blood to flow to the penis easily. As more and more blood flows to the penis, a pressure is created. This leads to an erection.

Uses

Viagra 50 mg is prescribed for the treatment of following disorders:

1. Erectile Dysfunction (ED) – an inability to achieve or maintain an erection making it difficult to have sexual intercourse.
2. Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH) – high blood pressure levels in the arteries connecting the heart and the lungs.

Dosage

The recommended dose of Viagra 50 mg is one tablet per day. This pill is recommended to be taken once in 24 hours. It should be taken approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour before any sexual activity. It can be taken with or without food. The effects of this medicine last for around 4 to 5 hours.

Missed Dosage: This pill is taken as and when needed. Therefore, the chances of missing a dose are very less. However, if you are taking it for the problem of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH), take the missed dose as soon as possible. If it’s time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose. Consult your doctor about what should be done when a dose is missed.

Overdose: An overdose of this medicine can lead to serious side effects. If you experience any side effects that persist for long, contact your doctor immediately.

Important Advisory

Before you take Viagra 50mg, tell your doctor:

1. If you are allergic to Viagra or Revatio.
2. If you suffer from diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease, etc.
3. If you have a history of stroke, heart attack, or chest pain.
4. If you are undergoing any surgery.
5. If you have an inherited eye condition such as retinitis pigmentosa.
6. If you have a bleeding disorder such as hemophilia.
7. If you have a physical deformity of the penis or Peyronie’s.
8. If you have blood circulation problems.

Side Effects

Like any other drug, Viagra 50mg comes with its own set of side effects. The most common side effects include:

3. Oral antifungals such as ketoconazole
4. Blood thinners such as warfarin
5. Barbiturates such as butalbital
6. Beta-blockers such as atenolol
7. Bosentan
8. Cimetidine
9. Antibiotics such as clarithromycin
10. HIV Protease inhibitors such as atazanavir, darunavir, indinavir, and ritonavir
11. Nevirapine
12. Other medicines for ED 
13. Medications for high blood pressure
14. Medicines for seizures such as carbamazepine
15. Rifabutin
16. Rifampin

Interaction with alcohol

Drinking alcohol while taking this medication can increase the risk of experiencing side effects. Avoid consuming alcohol alongside this medication.
