RU-486 (Mifepristone) Tablets

(3 customer reviews)

RU-486 (mifepristone) is used to terminate an early pregnancy in women. This oral medication is used in combination with misoprostol. It can be used to end a pregnancy in its first trimester. To have a medical abortion, the woman should be no more than 5 to 9 weeks pregnant.

Mifepristone is an anti-progestational steroid. It works by blocking the effects of progesterone. A lack of progesterone softens the cervix and causes uterine contractions. Contractions help expel the tissue from the uterine cavity, thus ending the pregnancy.

The medication also helps manage high blood sugar levels in people who have Cushing’s syndrome.

How It Works

RU-486 falls under the class of drugs known as anti progestational steroids. It works by blocking the effects of the hormone progesterone.  Progesterone is a hormone that supports pregnancy. It helps thicken the lining of the uterus to prepare for a fertilized egg.

Combined with mifepristone, it causes uterine contractions. Contraction is when the muscles of the uterus tighten and then relax. This happens repeatedly to push the pregnancy tissue out of the body. This results in pregnancy termination.

In Cushing’s syndrome, it reduces blood glucose levels by blocking the activity of cortisol. Cortisol is among the body’s natural substances that control blood glucose level. By blocking cortisol, it decreases the amount of blood glucose. Take this medication as advised by your doctor for safe and effective treatment.

  3. I was 5 weeks pregnant and chose to terminate it. Took a single pill of RU-486 and was asked to take Cytotec 200 mcg 24 hours later to induce. Had a heating pad on to reduce the pain. Everything went well and I’m no more pregnant.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

RU 486, also known as mifepristone, is typically administered at a doctor's clinic. A single 200 mg tablet is taken orally. RU 486 works by blocking the effects of progesterone, which helps in terminating the pregnancy.
RU 486 should be taken under medical supervision once the pregnancy is confirmed and a medical abortion is chosen. It is intended for use in the first trimester of pregnancy, specifically within the first 9 weeks.
When used with misoprostol, RU-486 is highly effective, with an efficacy rate of around 97% for pregnancies less than 9 weeks old. This combination induces a miscarriage-like abortion.
No, RU-486 and Plan B are different. RU-486 is an abortion pill used to terminate an early pregnancy, while Plan B is an emergency contraceptive intended to prevent pregnancy before it starts. Plan B is commonly referred to as the "morning-after" pill.
Medical abortion generally does not affect future pregnancies. However, there is a small risk of complications, such as a womb infection, which could potentially impact fertility. Consult your doctor for detailed information and advice.
Most women begin to bleed within 24 to 48 hours after taking mifepristone. The bleeding typically resembles a heavy menstrual period and can be managed with sanitary pads.
Bleeding and spotting can last between 9 to 16 days or longer after taking mifepristone. A follow-up visit with your doctor is usually scheduled after 14 days to ensure the pregnancy has been terminated and to check your health.
Both medical and surgical abortions are effective and safe. Medical abortion is an option only if the pregnancy is less than 9 weeks old. It does not involve surgical risks and can be performed at home with minimal clinic visits, resembling a heavy period or miscarriage. Surgical abortion may be necessary for pregnancies beyond this timeframe or for other medical reasons.
