Successful mast-cell-targeted treatment of select gynecological conditions

Dr. Lawrence Afrin and I are pleased to announce the publishing of our paper with Dr. Lila Rosenthal and Dr. Shanda Dorff. We spent over two years and 200+ hours working in this article. We are hopeful that these novel treatment options will help women who suffer from these issues and the doctors who treat them. This article will be helpful to a large number of women who suffer the problems described, as these problems often have gone on for long times with no identifiable cause.

Our publication of this article now offers these women and their doctors a new diagnostic consideration, which actually is a prevalent disease, and thus might apply to many of the women who suffer with these problems.

This article will also be helpful to researchers in this area who have long been stymied as to causes of these problems, as our article now provides them a new direction for exploration, which might otherwise not have come to their attention until a more distant point in the future. Dyspareunia (pain on intercourse), vaginitis (inflammation of the vagina), and abnormal uterine bleeding are common problems in women which, despite having many *potential* causes, nevertheless commonly don’t have any apparent clear cause and are resistant to traditional treatments. Mast cells are present throughout the genital tract, and the dysfunctional mast cells driving mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) have potential for causing all of these problems.

This paper presents several patients with these problems; all of them responded well to mast-cell-targeted treatment.

We therefore recommend diagnostic consideration of MCAS in women who have any of these problems without other apparent cause and in whom one can see the general profile of MCAS (i.e., chronic multisystem inflammation +/- allergic-type issues +/- abnormalities in growth or development in potentially any tissues).

More research is needed to clarify the roles of mast cells in these common problems in women and which diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for these problems will be optimal.
